Inside AATSS — Summer 1997 Newsletter
President's Message...by Michele Grabowski
As we enter into the 97-98 Membership Year for the Arizona Association of Temporary and Staffing Services, we have many things to look forward to. Our membership drive is in full swing and we are receiving dues daily from industry companies throughout the state of Arizona. As a special reminder, please note that as AATSS members, we agree and commit to the National Association of Temporary and Staffing Services Code of Ethics and Good Practices. As a paid AATSS and/or NATTS member, there are administrative procedures available to you that support these guidelines. Contact any AATSS Board member for further information.
We are in the process of formalizing a Tucson Chapter to complement our Association and look forward to the Tucson's continued support of AATSS. I am especially proud to announce that Dina Simon of Volt Services in Tucson has been voted in as the Tucson Chapter President. Congratulations Dina!
As the oldest and largest association representing our industry, we continually look to enhance service to our valued membership. As we add volunteers to each Committee and strengthen the Board of Directors, we are able to improve the level of services we can offer. Just a few of these services include this Quarterly Newsletter, a recruiting website called AZ-Jobs designed by Image One, and an increased number of Affiliate Members who specialize in providing services to our industry.
I am proud to serve as the President of an Association that has accomplished so much. With the support of the dedicated individuals that serve on the AATSS Board or on any one of our Committees, and the contribution of our Members, this Association will continue to promote the best interested of the industry and its member companies.

Staff One Search Receives Arizona's Athena Award...by Kim Grinolds
Ronni Anderson's philosophy, "When you give back, when you make a commitment, I think, as a whole, you help our society, you end up helping the business community, and for every person's life you touch, you end up touching five or ten people," is only part of the reason for the success of Staff One Search.
Anderson's commitment to the business community as a whole, and specifically to the upward mobility of women in business, earned her the 1997 Arizona Athena Award, presented to her in April by the Arizona Chamber of Commerce.
Fourteen years ago, after running her own insurance agency in Denver, Anderson moved to Phoenix and founded Staff One Search.
In 1983, when Staff One first opened its doors, Ronni Anderson was the sole employee; doing all the recruiting, marketing, sales, secretarial, bookkeeping and janitorial duties required.
Today, the company employs 13 people, all of whom are women, and specializes in direct hire, temporary staffing, executive placement, employee leasing and payroll services.
The motto of Staff One is "Excellence in Employment"; the company's mission, Excellence in uniting firms of Arizona with quality personnel, while contributing to the growth and development of both."
Anderson feels that the most rewarding element of her work is the impact Staff One has on the hundreds of people successfully placed over the years.
"Staff One Search is not only a great small business on the bottom line, the company and founder Ronnie Anderson are wonderful examples of what the entire Athena ideal is all about," said Sarah Cowgill, the Chamber of Commerce vice president for marketing and membership.
Anderson's beliefs about how to motivate a workforce remains firm. "I'm not the kind of manager to breathe down their necks," she says. "I set goals and parameters, and they know they're going to get a pat on the back if they hit their numbers."
She also attributes the company's success to her staff, which shares her vision of "helping one person at a time."
Named SBA's 1996 Women in Business Advocate of the Year for Arizona, Anderson exhibits a commitment to the professional growth of women.
Staff One is one of few privately-held, female owned agencies in the valley.
She is active in numerous organizations including the Arizona Association of Temporary Services, the Arizona Association of Personnel Services. She is the past president of the board of directors the Women's Executive Association of Metropolitan Phoenix and Arizona Business Alliance, and is now an active member of the National Association of Women Business Owners and the North Phoenix Rotary Club, serves as a board member of Florence Crittendon Services, and is an advisory board member for Orme School.
One of her most rewarding associations is service on the advisory board of Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL), a nonprofit organization that assists the disabled in returning to the workforce.
"The four most powerful words are 'You can do it,' " Anderson says.
She also tries to convince hardworking women they'd be better of getting paid on commission; a difficult transition for many to make from the regularity of an hourly-based paycheck. If they're confident in their abilities, she argues, they should be rewarded for their efforts.
Today, two of her employees earn at least $100,000 a year in commissions, and several others make in the $30,000-$60,000 range.
Anderson, who is strongly goal-oriented, says she believes people have a need to achieve and putting goals in writing helps them get there.
She encourages the women she employs, as well as her clients, to pursue desires of starting their own business and counsels them on the risk and rewards of striking out on their own, saying "Life's too short. You should love what you do."
Preparing Youth for Industry Update...by Larry Scott
Mission: Encouraging at risk students to stay in school and realize career options.
The rewards are endless when you have the opportunity to work with today's youth and even slightly affect their lives. Preparing Youth for industry can give you that opportunity! We've been working with Junior Achievement for a year now and openings are available for this fall. Once a week for a half an hour is all it takes.
P.Y.I. and The East Valley School to Work Initiative is unfolding a Mentorship program to start this fall. A high school student would come into your office once a week to spend time with an individual. Observing, listening, and learning about your perspectives of our industry and how they can fit successfully into the workforce.
For more information, or if you would like to participate in a program, please contact Larry Scott at 730.1808.
Membership Committee Update...by Tom Secor
The 1997-1998 Membership drive is in full gear as we prepare ourselves for another exciting year in the staffing industry. This year we have looked to expand our membership through the growth of the industry and through affiliate companies that serve our industry. We are also pleased to announce the formation of our Tucson Chapter, headed by Dina Simon of Volt Services. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you that have joined and encourage those of you that have not, to do so.
As one of the largest employers in Arizona, it is important that the Association that speaks for our industry is strengthened by all services, both National and Local. The Association, through its members, is active in legislative issues, social concerns and industry ethics. As a member, you are showing your support for the industry that directly supports you.
We will be preparing our Annual Directory for distribution to all of our members. The Directory is a helpful guide for members to support the industry through referrals and partnerships. For our affiliate members, I strongly encourage you to join the Association, allowing you to have your company's information included for members to see all year long.
Once again, thank you for your membership and please feel free to call me if you have any questions, suggestions or are interested in becoming involved with one of the various committees. I can be reached at 602.279.1100.
