Inside AATSS — Spring 1997 Newsletter

President's Message...by Linda Curry

Our association is fortunate enough to have many dedicated individuals who help carry on the work of our state chapter. During the 1996 NATSS convention in Orlando, FL, our chapter was recognized with a Superior Merit Award for our efforts throughout the past year. Thank you to all the members and our Board of Directors who have given their personal time and commitment to the Arizona Association of Temporary and Staffing Services.

Our Chapter continues to grow and we have been very active in developing programs and committees to address our members and industry needs. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I ask you to consider making a commitment to your Association by serving in a leadership role, as a committee member or through your company's active membership. Together we will continue to make a difference.

I am pleased to introduce Michele Grabowski as the Chapter's incoming President for 1997-1999. Many of you know Michele through her active participation and dedication to the Board and as our membership chair for the past two years. Through Michele's leadership and your involvement, our Association will grow stronger and provide increased services for our members and our customers through industry related programs, committees and legislative action.

On a personal note, I would like to thank our membership for the opportunity to serve as your President for the past two years. It has been a rewarding experience and I've enjoyed meeting and working with the top industry professionals in our state. See you at the next quarterly meeting on March 13th!

Preparing Youth for Industry Update...by Larry Scott

Mission: Encouraging at risk students to stay in school and realize career options.

P.Y.I. has recently had the opportunity to partnership with Junior Achievement in providing volunteers from AATSS membership to sponsor and mentor students from Kindergarten to 12th grade.

Multiple participants from Volt Services, Remedy, and Staffing Solutions have recently donated their time.

Junior Achievement is still looking for Role Models to act as Ambassadors from their organization to work with students this semester. Contact Larry Scott at 730.1808 if you are interested in being a participant. You can give so much with just a little of your time!

Program Committee Update...by Kelli Overman

A hearty "thank you" to all our members for a great turnout in 1996. Our quarterly luncheons averaged 52 attendees.

For the upcoming year our meetings will be held on March 13, June 12, September 11, and December 4. The March luncheon meeting is currently being organized and the Valley Human Resource Panel Discussion will be held again in September. We are also trying to organize a joint meeting with our Tucson members, sometime in the 2nd or 3rd quarter. Any and all suggestions for program content, speakers and topics are appreciated. I will be calling members prior to each meeting to assist in various program duties, i.e. greeters. The more involved the merrier.

I would also like to remind all members to RSVP before each meeting. Last year, we had some difficulties in accommodating last minute attendees. We want to make sure the meetings are organized and enjoyable for all. If you have any suggestions, I can be reached at 266.6930 or Fax 266.8030.

Local Staffing Firm Forms Computer Training Division...by Ronnie Anderson

Staff One Search has announced that the firm has purchased Competitive Edge Training and has renamed the operation Computer One Training, which will be a division of Staff One Search. Computer One Training will offer current, comprehensive, and customized training for Arizona businesses and government entities. The firm will offer a wide range of computer software and Internet classes on operating systems, word processing, spreadsheet, database, graphics and desktop publishing software for Windows and other proprietary systems. Cathy Peters, former President of Competitive Edge Training, has joined the organization and will serve as the Chief Operating Officer for the division.

Computer One's headquarters will be located at the corporate offices of Staff One Search, however, training classes will be conducted at several locations across the Valley, in Tucson and Yuma.

Training is a perfect adjunct to our core business — staffing. Often we see candidates with all the skills that a potential employer requests, except perhaps a proficiency in Word or Excel. There is now an easy solution to provide that essential skill through our training division. Computer One will be giving a discount to anyone referred by AATSS or AAPS member for computer training.

Adopt a Family...by Thomas Secor

On December 20th, Linda Curry, Richard Compton, Michele Grabowski and I delivered wrapped Christmas gifts and care packages to the March family in Tempe. Working through the Tempe Community Action Center, we were able to brighten the Christmas holiday for the family of five.

Bob Fleming, from TCAC, outlined the families needs as his agency focuses on helping needy families through crisis situations. Our focus was to extend our resources to do the same and give back to the communities that we work in. Donations were made by various members, and AATSS filled in the gaps to provide a well rounded Christmas morning for Rose and her children. They received toys, clothes, household items and even a new bicycle from the Association.

Rose and her family gave us a nice thank you card with the picture of the family. It was a pleasure putting this event together and a great opportunity to experience the true meaning of "it's better to give than to receive". Thanks again to all those firms that donated a little extra and to all the association members for supporting the community, which include: Express Personnel, Olsten Staffing Services, Printers Personnel, Bing and Associates and Temco Personnel.
