Inside AATSS — Fall/Winter 1997 Newsletter
President's Message...by Michele Grabowski
I recently had the pleasure of attending the 31st annual NATSS Convention in Atlanta, and am very proud to announce that for the second year in a row, AATSS received the coveted Superior chapter Merit Award! NATSS evaluated its state chapters based on their support of the staffing services industry through chapter programming, educational seminars, government relations, activities and community outreach efforts. This award means a great deal to the AATSS board and committee chairs, for it formally recognizes our chapter and its dedication to promoting and protecting the staffing services industry in the state of Arizona.
AATSS had its annual Planning and Joint Board of Directors meeting in November. The purpose of this meeting was to plan and strategize for the 1998 year. As a direct result of this meeting, we developed a Public Relations Committee. If you are interested in joining this or any other AATSS Committee, please contact me at 602.258.1403.

National Temporary Help Week...by Jose Villaneuva, Champion Personnel Services
National Temp Help Week was October 13-19 this year. AATSS looked for new ways to utilize NTHW to promote the temporary staffing services in Arizona. Typically AATSS celebrates NTHW by placing a Banner Ad in the Arizona Republic announcing NTHW with all members of AATSS listed. We repeated that event again this year. Another step taken this year was to get involved in one of the events sponsored by NATSS during the celebration week, which is the National Temporary Employee of the Year Award. AATSS held a local contest and the winner was submitted as a nominee for the national award. We also contacted all the radio stations in the Phoenix area to see if they would run a public service announcement.
The following members submitted a nomination for the Phoenix Temporary Employee of the Year: Squaw Peak Personnel, TAD, Manpower, Kelly and Interim Healthcare. Tucson submitted its own nominee for the national award.
The winner of the 1997 AATSS Temporary Employee of the Year was Mary Barker, RN, with Interim Healthcare. Although Mary did not win the national award, she did win the AATSS award and will be receiving a certificate to commemorate this achievement.
Preparing Youth for Industry Update...by Larry Scott
In addition to obtaining a new client, what could be more rewarding than having the opportunity to provide direction to today's youth?
P.Y.I. has initiated and developed an AATSS Mentorship Program in conjunction with Moon Valley High School. Three members, Volt, Manpower and Olsten have just completed a six week program working with students. Nesco Staffing has joined the group in sponsoring a second round of Mentorship Programs starting November 5th.
On another front, Junior Achievement and P.Y.I. continue their successful partnership in providing volunteers for in-class programs. Thank you for your support and participation!
For more information, or if you would like to participate in a program, please contact Larry Scott at 602.730.1808.
Tuscon Update
The AATSS Tucson Chapter hosted their Human Resources Panel Program on September 30th with 48 people in attendance. The HR Professionals came from the areas of manufacturing (Weiser Lock), meidcal (Carondolet Healthcare), information technology (Net-Media), legal (Mesch, Clark and Rothschild), teleservices (Opinion Research), and education (The University of Arizona). The panelists were given 5 questions with a response time of 2-3 minutes. The questions ranged from what two most important factors are considered in choosing a staffing service to how do their full-time employees view temporary help employees? All panelists seemed to enjoy themselves and gave all of us valuable information as well as encouragement and support regarding the challenges of our industry.
Inside AATSS is published quarterly to its members and affiliates.
